    Legendary commentator and broadcaster Joe Lartey passes away at the age of 96

    Legendary Ghanaian sports journalist Joaquim Awuley Lartey, fondly known as Joe Lartey, has passed away, as confirmed by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) on Saturday.

    In a statement, SWAG announced, “The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) announces the death of Mr Joachim Awuley Lartey aka ‘Joe Lartey’ on April 26, 2024.

    “Lartey, who served as the first President of SWAG, passed away at the age of 96. Further details regarding his demise and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

    Born on June 6, 1927, in Accra, Joe Lartey attended Accra Academy. He gained renown as an iconic broadcaster, earning the moniker “Over to You.

    Lartey’s illustrious career in journalism commenced in 1961 at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as a football commentator.

    He later joined Radio Nigeria and remained there until 1990 before returning to GBC, where he hosted programs such as Sports Digest on GTV.

    In June 2022, Lartey received the esteemed “A Life in Sport” honour from the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) at the AIPS Sport Media Awards ceremony in Doha, Qatar.

    During the ceremony, wheeled onto the stage by SWAG president Kwabena Yeboah, Lartey’s presence elicited admiration from the audience, who greeted him with an overwhelming standing ovation.

    Expressing gratitude, Lartey remarked, “Thank you very much for bringing me all the way from Ghana to receive this wonderful honour. I came into contact with this organization (AIPS) in early 1971 thereabout, and the people who made it possible … both of them have passed on.”

    Joe Lartey’s influence on Ghanaian football commentators is profound, with many acknowledging his impact on their careers. His legacy in sports journalism will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.

    Ghanaians In Chicago Celebrate The Late Miss Catherine Kwarteng’s Life

    The Ghanaian community in Chicago came together to honor the memory of Miss Catherine Kwarteng ( aka Naana) . The largest groups which attended were the Amaniampong Kroye Kuo ( KONTONKYI) and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana , Redemption Congregation. She was a member of both groups.

    The commemorative events included a memorial service at Leak and Sons Funeral Home , and Traditional Final Funeral Rites held at the 83rd and Ellis Community Center . It’s heartwarming to witness such solidarity and respect for a cherished individual.

    Osei Yaw Akoto, a 45-year-old communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asante Mampong, was allegedly stabbed to death by his wife following a confrontation on Thursday night.

    He succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at The Asante Mampong Government Hospital. The Asante Mampong police have detained his wife for further investigation into the matter. This is indeed a somber and unfortunate event, and our thoughts go out to all affected by this tragedy.

    World renowned Ghanaian-American fiber optics innovator Dr. Thomas Owusu Mensah has sadly passed away

    Renowned Ghanaian-American fiber optics innovator and pioneer, Dr. Thomas Owusu Mensah, sadly passed away on the 27th of March 2024 at Kumasi Catholic Hope Exchange Hospital in Ghana’s Ashanti region after a brief illness. He was 74 years old.

    He was indeed a remarkable innovator in the field of fiber optics and his contributions have significantly advanced technology. His legacy will continue to impact the industry and inspire future generations of engineers and scientists.

    He had 14 patents, and was inducted into the US National Academy of Inventors in 2015.

    Mensah was a recipient of several awards, including Turner’s Trumpet Award for Fiber Optics Innovation, the Percy L. Julian Award, the Golden Torch Award, the highest award by the National Society Of Black Engineers , NSBE, William Grimes Award, and the Eminent Engineers award by AIChE. He was also a member of the AIChE 100.

    In December 2017 he received the Kwame Nkrumah African Genius Award in Science/Technology and Innovation in Ghana.
