Professor Francis Nkrumah, the eldest son of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has passed away at the age of 89. According to reports, he died on June 30, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished contributions to medical research and public health.
Prof. Nkrumah was born to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Madam Fanny Miller from Elmina in the Central Region. He excelled academically, earning a Cocobod scholarship to study medicine in Germany. Later, he became a renowned figure in medical research and public health, serving as the longest-serving director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR).
His notable contributions to poliomyelitis eradication initiatives across Africa earned him recognition from the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Region in October 2016. The medical community and the nation mourn the loss of Prof. Francis Nkrumah, a dedicated academic and proud son of Ghana’s first President.
