Voyager 1 Just Sent A Message From Interstellar Space 15.8 Billion Miles Away

Voyager 1 has successfully transmitted data from interstellar space, at a distance of about 15.8 billion miles from Earth. At this range, radio signals take more than 22 hours to travel one way, moving at the speed of light. The spacecraft crossed the heliopause in 2012, leaving the Sun’s protective bubble of solar wind and entering the interstellar medium—the space between stars filled with sparse gas, dust, and cosmic radiation.

This matters because Voyager 1 is the only operational probe directly sampling interstellar space. Its instruments measure plasma density, magnetic fields, and energetic particles, providing the first in-situ data from beyond the Solar System.
