There are moments in a nation’s life when a people rise so honorably that the entire country pauses, salutes, and says: This is how citizens should behave. Just days ago, the Volta Region gifted Ghana one of those moments. When a truck overturned and spilled its goods, an entire town mobilized , not to loot, not to scramble for “free things,” not to disgrace itself , but to pack every single item back into another truck. Not one bag stolen. Not one carton missing. A community stood tall, disciplined, united, and morally upright.

That story travelled across Ghana and the diaspora like fresh harmattan wind. It was a reminder that integrity still lives. That some communities still understand the meaning of collective responsibility. That Volta Region, often stereotyped and underestimated, remains a beacon of civic discipline.

And then , as if determined to stain that shining moment , a few officials entrusted with leading the region’s boys soccer team to the National Basic School Games in Accra decided to drag Volta’s name through the mud.

Their recklessness has now resulted in the disqualification of the entire team.

A team that topped its group with 7 points.

A team that fought with heart, discipline, and tactical brilliance.

A team that had become a symbol of regional pride.

All of it destroyed because someone, somewhere, decided that rules did not matter. That due diligence was optional. That the integrity shown by ordinary Voltarians on the roadside did not apply to them.

A Scandal Of Negligence And A Betrayal Of Regional Honor

Let us be clear: this is not a “mistake.”
This is not “unfortunate.”
This is not “regrettable.”

This is a betrayal.

Fielding an unqualified player at a national competition is not an accident , it is a deliberate act of negligence, incompetence, and or dishonesty. And it has consequences. Severe consequences.

The Volta Region contingent did not lose on the pitch. They were thrown out because the adults responsible for safeguarding the team’s legitimacy failed spectacularly.

How does a region that just demonstrated national-level integrity in a truck accident suddenly become the headline for rule-breaking at a national sports event?

How do ordinary citizens show more discipline than the officials paid or appointed to uphold standards?

How do we preach honesty to children while the adults leading them cut corners?

The Region Deserved Better

These boys trained.
They sacrificed.
They competed honorably.
They topped their group.
They earned their place.

And yet, because of the carelessness of a few, they are packing their bags and returning home , not as defeated athletes, but as victims of administrative irresponsibility.

The Volta Region deserved better.
The boys deserved better.
Ghana deserved better.

This Must Never Happen Again

The same region that became a national example of integrity must not allow its name to be tarnished by officials who do not understand the weight of responsibility.

There must be:

  • Accountability — not excuses.
  • Consequences — not cover-ups.
  • Reforms — not recycled incompetence.
  • A new standard — not business as usual.

Volta Region has shown Ghana how citizens should behave.
Now it must show Ghana how leaders should be held accountable.

The officials responsible for this disgrace must face the full measure of administrative discipline. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Now.

Because if a whole town can gather to protect the integrity of spilled goods on a highway, then surely the region can gather the courage to protect the integrity of its sports administration.

Volta Region stood tall last week.
It must stand tall again , by refusing to tolerate this shame.

The message must be clear, loud, and uncompromising:

Never again.
