Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang met with the leadership of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) to discuss strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening specialist healthcare delivery in Ghana and across the sub-region.

Led by Professor Afua Hesse, the delegation briefed the Vice President on preparations for an upcoming major medical outreach program. This initiative is expected to bring between 1,500 and 2,000 delegates to provide free medical services to patients.

The discussions also focused on the relaunch of the College’s Endowment Fund, which is set to be activated across participating countries during an upcoming gala. The fund is designed to provide sustainable financial support for the training of medical specialists.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed plans to establish a medical simulation centre in Ghana, a project intended to modernize specialist training and ensure the country remains competitive within the global medical landscape.

During the engagement, Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended the College for its commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians and the high quality of its training programs. She emphasized the importance of addressing existing gaps in healthcare by expanding access through multiple delivery outlets and fostering stronger collaboration between medical institutions.

The Vice President reaffirmed the government’s recognition of specialist training as a cornerstone of a resilient healthcare system. She urged a sustained partnership between the government and the College to ensure that Ghana continues to meet international standards while improving the overall quality of care for its citizens.
