The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, conferred an honorary Doctorate Degree upon prominent Ghanaian businessman Ibrahim Mahama during its 18th Special Congregation Ceremony. The Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners (E&P) received the distinction in recognition of his significant technological contributions to the mining sector and his extensive philanthropic initiatives.

The ceremony was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including former President John Dramani Mahama and former President John Agyekum Kufour, who serves as the Chancellor of the university.
Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah noted that Mahama’s firm has introduced critical innovations and technology to mining and support services, which has directly resulted in substantial job creation within the industry. Both former presidents offered their congratulations, praising his dedicated service to Ghana’s economic landscape.

In his acceptance remarks, Mahama expressed his gratitude for the academic honor and pledged to return to the university to share his professional journey and life experiences with the student body.
Mahama’s career began following his education at the College of North West London, leading to the 1997 establishment of Engineers & Planners. What started as a heavy equipment rental business has evolved into one of West Africa’s largest indigenous mining and construction firms.
The company now manages major contracts at the Tarkwa and Damang mines and has secured strategic ownership of gold concessions such as the Black Volta and Sankofa Gold Projects. Beyond mining, Mahama has diversified his business portfolio to include Dzata Cement Limited and Asutsuare Poultry Farms, while maintaining a commitment to social welfare through the Joyce Tamakloe Cancer Foundation.
