For seven days, the 61st Annual Inter‑Schools Sports Festival stood as a model of youthful discipline, athletic brilliance, and regional pride. From the opening whistle to the penultimate fixtures, the South Zone delivered one of its most competitive editions in recent memory. But in a dramatic and deeply regrettable turn, the festival’s final event, the much anticipated boys’ soccer grand finale between Anlo Senior High School (ANSECO) and ZIon College ( ZICO) , was abandoned following violent crowd disturbances that raged for nearly five hours.
What had been a serene, well‑executed week of sportsmanship was abruptly transformed into a scene of chaos, forcing officials to call off the closing ceremony, suspend award presentations, and evacuate thousands of students under tense conditions. The incident has sparked renewed debate about safety, preparedness, and institutional responsibility at major school sporting events.
A Week of Excellence, a Final Day of Turmoil
Until the final afternoon, the festival had unfolded with admirable order. Athletes delivered record‑chasing performances, schools rallied behind their teams, and the South Zone once again showcased the depth of talent that has long defined its sporting heritage.
Yet, beneath the surface, structural weaknesses were evident. Despite a student population exceeding 6,000, police presence throughout the week was minimal. On most days, barely five officers were visible, and rarely did security personnel remain on the grounds for more than three hours. The absence of an ambulance service, due to both Keta and Anloga emergency vehicles reportedly being out of service, left athletes vulnerable. This gap became glaring when two life‑threatening injuries occurred during a boys’ soccer match between KETASCO and Volta Senior High School (VOLTASCO).
School heads were also noticeably absent for large portions of the festival, leaving coordination largely in the hands of teachers and volunteers. By the time tensions escalated during the boys’ final, the system had no capacity to contain the surge of unrest. In the aftermath, KETASCO’s school bus was found severely damaged, symbolizing the scale of the disruption.
Basketball: KETASCO Dominates the Courts
If there was one discipline that showcased absolute supremacy, it was basketball. KETASCO delivered a commanding performance across both divisions.

A Festival to Remember, and a Lesson to Heed
The 61st Annual Inter‑Schools Sports Festival will be remembered for its brilliance, its emerging stars, and its fierce rivalries. But it will also be remembered for the painful reminder that athletic excellence must be matched by institutional preparedness.
The South Zone has once again proven its sporting pedigree. The challenge now is to ensure that future editions are safeguarded by stronger security, reliable medical support, and leadership presence befitting an event of this magnitude.
Only then can the tournament reclaim its full glory and continue shaping the next generation of disciplined, confident, and united young leaders.
