In Chicago, Illinois : Thanksgiving has long been a cherished tradition for Mr. and Mrs. Bennet Agyeman, who open their home each year to friends, family, and members of the Ghanaian community. This year, nearly forty guests gathered under their roof, transforming the day into a tapestry of fellowship, reflection, and gratitude. For many, the Agyeman household has become synonymous with Thanksgiving itself, a place where bonds are renewed and stories of resilience are shared.
The gathering was not merely a feast but a living testament to the power of community. Some attendees have faithfully joined the celebration year after year, only absent when travel to Ghana by the Agyeman’s coincided with the holiday. The president of the Ghanaian community church, observing the remarkable turnout of the Agyeman family at an earlier Thanksgiving service, fittingly christened the family circle “The Agyeman Tribe.”
The evening’s most profound moments came when guests were invited to share what they were thankful for. Their words painted a portrait of lives sustained by faith, perseverance, and love. One voice reminded all of the simple miracle of breath, declaring, “It’s great that I’m still breathing.” Others reflected on the overlooked blessings of daily life, the ability to rise each morning and press forward despite challenges.
Expressions of gratitude flowed freely. Many thanked God for safety and protection throughout the year, for children returning home safely for the holidays, and for the gift of family. One testimony celebrated healing after a devastating diagnosis, while another rejoiced in the addition of new life to the family.
Abena Agyeman-Bugyei shared her joy at publishing her book, Abena and Her Friday Jollof, now available on Amazon, a milestone that drew warm applause.
The younger generation offered their own tributes, thanking their parents not for games or gadgets, but for the gift of education. Their words carried pride and promise, underscoring the sacrifices made by parents who traveled from Ghana to the United States to secure a better future for their children.
At the heart of the evening stood the patriarch, Mr. Bennet Agyeman, who moderated the exchanges of thanksgiving. He recalled his arrival in the United States on August 18, 1973, and the trials he faced in bringing his wife to join him. His reflections were steeped in faith: “God has always been with me,” he repeated, even as he spoke of his own health challenges. With conviction, he affirmed his belief in healing, reminding all that “whatever one believes, he will achieve.”
The spiritual tone of the gathering was set by a divine opening prayer from Rosemary Amegashie and sealed with a powerful closing prayer from Reverend Emmanuel Betson.
The celebration was honored by the presence of distinguished traditional leaders, including the former Asantefuohene of Chicago, Nana Addai Baffour, the current Krontire, Nana Akosua Ako Pomaa, Akyempimhene Oheneba Boateng, Kyidomhemaa Nana Abena Agyeman-Bugyei, Nana Aboagye Manu, and other elders. Also in attendance were Evelyn Tetteh, President of the Church of the Ghanaian Community, Togbe Dr. Mark Kutame, Right Wing Subchief of the Ewe Association of Metropolitan Chicago, and his spouse, Dr. Mamie Kutame,an assembly that brought profound cultural depth and significance to the occasion.
The Agyeman Thanksgiving was more than a dinner; it was a living chronicle of gratitude, resilience, and faith. It reminded all present that Thanksgiving is not only about food and festivity but about the enduring strength of community and the grace of God that carries families through trials and triumphs alike. In the warmth of the Agyeman home, some members of the Ghanaian diaspora found a sanctuary of belonging, a place where gratitude was not just spoken but deeply felt.
This year’s celebration reaffirmed what has become a tradition: that the Agyeman household is not simply a venue for Thanksgiving, but a beacon of unity, faith, and love, a true tribe bound together by gratitude.
