The Rwandan High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency (HE) Rosemary Mbabazi, paid a significant courtesy call on the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) William Agyapong, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. The visit underscored the commitment of both nations to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in the defence sector.
High Commissioner’s Remarks and Key Announcements HE Mbabazi began by congratulating Lt Gen Agyapong on his recent promotion and appointment as CDS. She eloquently highlighted the longstanding and deeply rooted partnership between Rwanda and Ghana, a bond forged in one of Rwanda’s most challenging periods—the 1994 genocide. The High Commissioner lauded the solidarity and crucial support demonstrated by Ghana during that critical time, noting that this enduring relationship remains vibrant today.
A major point of discussion was the announcement that the Ghanaian government has granted permission for Rwanda to erect a monument in Ghana. This memorial will serve to honour the heroes, including the Ghanaian peacekeepers, who played a selfless and vital role in the restoration of peace in Rwanda.
Further demonstrating her nation’s empathy, HE Mbabazi also extended heartfelt condolences to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) regarding the unfortunate Z9 Helicopter crash.
CDS Agyapong Reflects on Shared History
In his response, Lt Gen Agyapong warmly welcomed the High Commissioner and took the opportunity to recount the pivotal role that Ghanaian peacekeepers played during the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) in 1994.
The CDS emphasized that Ghanaian troops worked tirelessly and professionally alongside other international forces, focusing on the critical tasks of de-escalating tensions and protecting vulnerable civilians. This contribution is a source of great pride for the GAF. Lt Gen Agyapong concluded by reaffirming GAF’s unwavering commitment to not only strengthening the already excellent existing relations but also to building upon the shared legacy of peacekeeping and cooperation that defines the bond between the two countries.
The visit serves as a strong indicator of the mutual respect and strategic importance placed on the partnership between Rwanda and Ghana, rooted in a shared history of sacrifice and a joint commitment to regional stability.
