The Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr. Terrance Michael Drew, revealed during a state visit to Jubilee House on Wednesday, March 4, that a powerful address by President John Dramani Mahama at the United Nations General Assembly inspired his journey to Ghana.
Dr. Drew informed the President that among the many speeches delivered at the global assembly, President Mahama’s remarks stood out as particularly moving, prompting an immediate directive to his team to facilitate a meeting.
The Caribbean leader expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received, noting that the invitation transformed his desire for a meeting into a full diplomatic welcome.
During his remarks, Dr. Drew described his arrival in the country as an emotional experience, stating that the drive through the streets of Ghana felt so familiar that he could not distinguish it from his own home. He framed the visit as a reconnection of family across the Atlantic rather than a standard diplomatic mission, emphasizing that the two nations are bound by more than just formal ties.
Reflecting on the shared history of the transatlantic slave trade, the Prime Minister noted that while the era forcibly separated ancestors, it failed to erase their culture, intellect, or resilience.
He highlighted that the spirit of Africa remains vibrant within the music, spirituality, and cuisine of St. Kitts and Nevis and the wider Caribbean region.
