The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is hosting a high-level Breakfast Forum in Accra this morning to deliberate on strategic pathways for decentralizing the legislature and bridging the gap between the institution and the Ghanaian populace.
As a seminal figure who has served in every Parliament of the Fourth Republic, the Speaker is leveraging his extensive experience in the nation’s democratic evolution to champion a more inclusive and accessible governance model.
The forum serves as a dedicated platform for Bagbin to advance his long-standing vision of bringing the Legislature to the doorsteps of every citizen, a move designed to shift the perception of Parliament from a distant elite body to one defined by public ownership.
During the session, the Speaker emphasized that true democratic maturity requires the legislative process to transcend the walls of the Parliament House in Accra and find resonance in the daily lives of people across all sixteen regions.
By facilitating more direct interaction between lawmakers and their constituents, the initiative aims to enhance effective participation in the nation’s legislative processes and ensure that the formulation of laws and policies reflects the direct aspirations and lived realities of the citizenry.
This decentralization drive is expected to involve regional parliamentary sittings, town hall engagements, and enhanced digital access to legislative proceedings, all aimed at demystifying the work of the House and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability that strengthens the bedrock of Ghana’s democracy.
