Chicago and surrounding suburbs are in for a rollercoaster of winter conditions over the next ten days, with sleet, plunging temperatures, and shifting winds demanding extra caution and preparation from residents.

The week kicks off with relatively mild conditions on Tuesday, featuring cloudy skies and a high of 22°F. But Wednesday brings the first major alert: a 30% chance of rain and sleet, with temperatures climbing to 31°F and winds shifting west at 13 mph. The forecast warns to expect sleet, so commuters should plan for slippery roads and reduced visibility. If you must travel, do so early and avoid the evening rush.

Thursday offers a brief reprieve with partly cloudy skies and a high of 25°F, but the real plunge begins Friday. Temperatures nosedive to a low of -11°F with a high of just 10°F, and the chill continues into Saturday with similar subzero lows and a high of only 8°F. Winds from the northwest will add bite to the cold, so bundle up and limit outdoor exposure.

Sunday and Monday bring slight warming, with highs reaching 15°F and 17°F respectively. Monday’s sunshine offers a psychological lift, but don’t let it fool you, overnight lows remain frigid.

By Tuesday, temperatures rebound to a high of 27°F under partly cloudy skies, followed by a midweek cooldown with highs of 20°F and 16°F on Wednesday and Thursday. Winds remain variable, shifting from southwest to northwest throughout the period.

Weather Advice:

  • Wednesday’s sleet warning is serious. Avoid unnecessary travel and keep salt or sand handy for walkways.
  • Friday and Saturday’s deep freeze can be dangerous. Protect pipes, pets, and vulnerable neighbors.
  • Dress in layers, cover extremities, and watch for frostbite signs during subzero days.
  • Check your vehicle’s battery, tires, and fluids—cold snaps are notorious for breakdowns.
  • Stay informed. Weather can shift quickly, and wind direction changes may affect snow drift and visibility.

This is winter at its most unpredictable. Stay warm, stay safe, and stay ready.
