A disturbing video circulating on social media has reignited public concern over road safety enforcement on Ghana’s major highways. The footage, captured and posted by SIKAOFFICIALIR (@SIKAOFFICIAL1) on X.com, shows a truck with registration number ER 2967-11 transporting an unsecured shipping container while weaving recklessly across lanes on the Tema Motorway.

The container, visibly unfastened and swaying with every movement of the truck, posed a severe risk to motorists. Eyewitnesses say the driver drifted between lanes, at times occupying two lanes simultaneously, creating panic among other road users.

What has shocked many Ghanaians even more is the claim that the truck passed through police checkpoints without being stopped or inspected. Social media users have questioned how such a dangerous vehicle could be allowed to continue its journey unchecked.

Road safety advocates say the incident reflects a deeper, systemic problem: weak enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

“This is not just indiscipline by a driver. It is a failure of the system meant to protect us,” one commentator wrote. “If this container had fallen, we would be counting bodies today.”

Ghana continues to record high numbers of road crashes, many linked to speeding, mechanical failures, and poor cargo handling. Safety experts warn that unsecured containers are among the most lethal hazards on highways, capable of crushing vehicles or causing multi‑car pileups.

The incident has sparked renewed calls for the police to intensify highway checks, enforce strict cargo‑securing regulations, and impose heavier fines on offenders. Many believe that without strong deterrents, reckless drivers will continue to endanger lives.

Civil society groups are urging the Ghana Police Service to investigate the incident, identify officers who may have failed in their duties, and ensure accountability.

As the video continues to circulate, Ghanaians are demanding immediate action to prevent what many describe as “a disaster waiting to happen.” The public consensus is clear: road safety enforcement must be strengthened before another tragedy strikes.
