President John Dramani Mahama hosted the Diplomatic Corps at the Presidency on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, for the traditional exchange of New Year greetings, where he reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to democracy, international dialogue, and a stable global order. Addressing the gathered heads of mission, the President emphasized that diplomacy remains the most credible pathway for collective action, noting that Ghana’s foreign policy continues to be anchored in the rule of law and inclusive sustainable development.
During his address, President Mahama highlighted significant strides in restoring macroeconomic stability, pointing to fiscal discipline as a key driver in reducing inflation and stabilizing the national currency. He detailed several flagship initiatives aimed at accelerating national growth, including the “Big Push” infrastructure agenda, the 24-Hour Economy policy, and the Mahama Cares Programme, while also noting the successful negotiation of new labor mobility and visa waiver agreements to boost trade and tourism.
The President further asserted Ghana’s leadership on the continent, advocating for African solutions to African problems and reaffirming his commitment to regional integration. He announced that Ghana intends to table a resolution at the United Nations to officially recognize the transatlantic slave trade as the greatest crime against humanity, calling for international support for its adoption.
Supporting the President’s vision, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, thanked the diplomats for their vital role as bridges between Ghana and the world, reiterating the nation’s focus on economic diplomacy and South-South cooperation.
The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and Moroccan Ambassador, Imane Quaadil, congratulated Ghana on its peaceful democratic transition and praised the country’s leadership in promoting regional peace and security.
The event was attended by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, members of the Council of State, and traditional leaders, signaling a unified front in Ghana’s diplomatic and developmental aspirations for the year ahead.
