KUMASI, GHANA—President John Dramani Mahama joined a host of high-profile dignitaries to pay his last respects to the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at her burial service in Kumasi. As part of the solemn ceremony, President Mahama laid a wreath in honor of the Queen Mother, a traditional gesture symbolizing respect and remembrance. The President’s presence underscored the national significance of the funeral rites, which have been ongoing since the Queen’s passing in 2017.
The funeral, a grand affair steeped in Asante tradition, attracted notable figures from various sectors of Ghanaian society, including political leaders, traditional rulers, and members of the diplomatic corps. The gathering provided an opportunity for leaders to mourn with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the entire Asante Kingdom. The late Asantehemaa was revered for her wisdom and contribution to the unity and stability of the Asante Kingdom during her long reign.
The final rites for Nana Konadu Yiadom III mark the culmination of a series of ceremonies that began following her death. The rituals, which are meticulously performed according to Asante customs, are aimed at ensuring the deceased Queen Mother’s peaceful transition.
