President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated the Presidential Advisory Group on the Economy, signaling a decisive shift toward restoring fiscal discipline and rebuilding investor confidence through a comprehensive “reset” of Ghana’s economic governance.
During the ceremony held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the President called for a period of “correction without amnesia,” urging the nation to learn from past mismanagement, including political interference in state-owned enterprises and the recent loss of sustainability in COCOBOD’s loan syndication. He emphasized that the group’s mission extends beyond mere recovery, focusing instead on deep-rooted institutional reform and structural transformation to re-establish Ghana as a competitive and predictable global economy.
The newly formed advisory body is composed of a distinguished assembly of experts from academia, capital markets, and the private sector, including Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ishmael Yamson, Kwame Pianim, and Sir Samuel Esson Jonah. Other notable members include former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Henry A. Kofi Wampah, and Ghana Stock Exchange CEO Abena Amoah.
President Mahama tasked the group with providing frank, evidence-based counsel on critical milestones such as the national budget and medium-term development plans, while working alongside technical support from the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana. By anchoring their advice in the long-term national interest, the President noted that the group would play a pivotal role in navigating the current debt distress and fostering a culture of accountability that ensures inclusive growth for all Ghanaians.
