Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound surprise at the accelerated pace of Ghana’s economic recovery, admitting that the turnaround has exceeded his own administration’s initial projections. Speaking at the First Sky Group’s Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, the President revealed that he had originally anticipated a minimum of two years to stabilize the economy given the severity of the crisis his government inherited. Instead, he noted that the scale of progress achieved in just one year has garnered significant praise from international financial institutions, positioning Ghana as a “poster boy” for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
The President highlighted several key indicators to illustrate the shift, specifically pointing to the dramatic reduction in inflation from 23.8% to 5.4% within a single year. He also cited the unprecedented 37% appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi over the same period as a milestone that has astonished global economists.
President Mahama attributed these gains to a combination of disciplined policy implementation and spiritual intervention, stating that the speed of the recovery was beyond human imagination. He concluded by noting that officials from the IMF and World Bank frequently express disbelief at the country’s rapid stabilization, reinforcing the government’s stance that the nation has moved past the most difficult phase of its economic challenges.
