On the margins of the 39th African Union Summit, former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali convened for a high-level bilateral meeting focused on the strategic trajectory of the continental body.
The two leaders engaged in deep deliberations regarding the pressing necessity for comprehensive structural reforms within the African Union, asserting that the current framework must be optimized to achieve greater administrative and operational efficiency.
Central to their discussion was the conviction that a modernized African Union is essential for navigating the continent’s increasingly volatile security landscape and its complex economic and political transitions.
President Mahama and Abiy Ahmed highlighted that without significant institutional strengthening, the organization risks falling behind the rapidly evolving challenges that define the 21st century. By emphasizing a shared commitment to capacity building, the leaders underscored the importance of ensuring the AU remains a robust, agile, and effective vehicle for driving sustainable development and maintaining regional stability.
Their exchange serves as a renewed call for member states to prioritize internal progress and unified action, ensuring the African Union can adequately serve the interests of its citizens within a competitive and shifting global order.
