Ghana has entered a new phase of its economic reform journey as President John Dramani Mahama has officially signed the 24‑Hour Economy Authority Bill into law. The long‑anticipated legislation, described by the President as “the bill Ghanaians have been waiting for,” establishes the legal framework for implementing one of the administration’s flagship strategies for national economic transformation.

The signing ceremony, held in Accra, marks the culmination of months of parliamentary deliberations, stakeholder consultations, and public debate. President Mahama noted that although the process took time, the government was determined to follow every procedural requirement to ensure the bill’s credibility, durability, and national acceptance.

“I have today appended my signature, giving assent to the 24‑Hour Authority Bill,” he said. “This is a bill Ghanaians have been waiting for. It was one of our flagship strategies for economic transformation. It has taken a while, but we needed to go through the process patiently.”

The new law establishes the 24‑Hour Economy Authority, a statutory body tasked with coordinating, regulating, and promoting round‑the‑clock economic activity across key sectors. The Authority will work with industry, labour unions, local governments, and private investors to expand shift‑based operations, enhance productivity, and create new employment opportunities.

Economists and policy analysts have long argued that a structured 24‑hour economy could help Ghana reduce congestion in urban centers, increase industrial output, strengthen the services sector, and attract new investment. Supporters believe the initiative could also improve public service delivery, expand job opportunities for young people, and boost Ghana’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.

With the bill now signed into law, the next phase involves operationalizing the Authority, appointing its leadership, and rolling out pilot programs in manufacturing, logistics, health services, tourism, and digital operations.

For many Ghanaians, the signing represents more than a legislative milestone—it signals a renewed national commitment to innovation, productivity, and inclusive growth. As the country prepares for implementation, expectations remain high that the 24‑Hour Economy Authority will help reshape Ghana’s economic landscape and open new pathways for prosperity.
