ACCRA — His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has formally handed over forty armoured vehicles to the Ghana Police Service, marking a significant stride in the national effort to retool security services and strengthen internal security operations.
The provision of the vehicles is aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the Police Service, bolstering the fight against violent crime, and ensuring the safety of officers engaged in high-risk duties.
The fleet consists of twenty-five fully armoured units and fifteen light armoured vehicles. The specialized consignment includes five (5) Cobra-4 units, twenty (20) Cobra-3 units, and fifteen (15) TLC-79 pickups, all designed for use in specialized tactical support and operations across the country.
The vehicles are expected to improve rapid response capabilities and officer protection.
During the handing over ceremony, President Mahama stated that the initiative is part of a broader commitment to adequately resourcing the Police Service and other security agencies to enable them to effectively discharge their constitutional mandate of protecting lives, property, and national assets.
He also commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the service personnel for their recent successes in crime fighting.
In his remarks, IGP Yohuno expressed profound appreciation to the President for the vital support. He assured that the vehicles would be deployed for effective operational use and properly maintained to ensure their longevity and sustained impact on crime prevention and control.
The event concluded with a “Show of Force” exercise, led by the IGP and supported by officers from the Operations Department, as part of security preparations leading up to the Christmas Festivities.
