A fresh wave of tension is rolling through Ghana’s parliamentary minority as outspoken legislator Kennedy Agyapong lifts the veil on what he describes as an orchestrated push to unseat Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. According to Agyapong, the loudest critics of the Minority Leader are not driven by ideology or performance concerns, they simply want his job.

Agyapong revealed that some within the caucus are now arguing that the Minority Leader should come from the Eastern or Ashanti Region, a shift he believes is less about regional balance and more about political maneuvering. He disclosed that he has personally advised Afenyo-Markin to step aside if the internal agitation continues.

In a pointed remark, Agyapong suggested that Afenyo-Markin’s personal success has become a weapon used against him. “Afenyo-Markin is well-to-do, so he should step down as Minority Leader for those who are fighting him to take over,” he said, highlighting what he sees as envy and ambition masquerading as principle.

The Assin Central MP, known for naming names without hesitation, hinted that he is restraining himself this time. “If it were the olden days, I would have mentioned the names of those seeking his position, but now, I won’t,” he added, signaling that the internal contest may be deeper and more sensitive than it appears.

Agyapong’s comments expose a growing fracture within the minority caucus, one shaped by regional politics, personal ambition, loyalty to the flagbearer and the perennial struggle for influence. As the debate intensifies, Afenyo-Markin’s leadership sits at the center of a storm that could reshape the minority front in Parliament.

For now, the political chessboard remains unsettled, and all eyes are on how the next move will be played.
