The Savannah Regional Police Intelligence Department apprehended twenty-two Togolese nationals on Friday, January 23, 2026, on suspicion of engaging in illegal mining activities within the West Gonja Municipality. The arrests took place following a targeted operation where police officers intercepted a Kia truck, registered as BA 223-12, which was being driven by a suspect identified as Abdul Majeed Yakubu.
During the initial interrogation, the occupants of the vehicle confirmed they were nationals of Togo and disclosed that they were traveling to Tuntumba, a community known for illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey.” The suspects reportedly admitted their intention to participate in these unauthorized mining operations upon their arrival.
All twenty-two individuals are currently being held in police custody as part of ongoing investigations into the incident. Authorities have indicated that the suspects will be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service to undergo the required immigration and legal processing. Regional police officials have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
