Burr Ridge , IL — Amidst the celebratory atmosphere of the Ghana Nurses Association Illinois (GNAI) inaugural ceremony, attendees were handed more than a commemorative brochure. They were handed a piece of living history.

Within its pages was a compelling narrative authored by the association’s President and Founder, Laura Cynthia Boakye, who chronicled the remarkable journey of an organization that began as a simple idea and grew into a thriving professional body 240 members strong. The story also paid tribute to her co-founder, Mansa Larbi, whose partnership and leadership were instrumental in transforming that vision into reality.

Though the narrative was not read from the stage, it resonated powerfully among guests who leafed through the pages, discovering how a single message sparked a movement that would unite Ghanaian nursing professionals across Illinois under one banner of service, excellence, and community impact.

GNAI, President Boakye wrote, that the GNAI did not begin in a corporate boardroom or a hospital administrative office. It began with a single, hopeful WhatsApp message.

The Ping That Started It All

On February 10, 2025, a digital call to action was sent out to Ghanaian nurses living and working across Illinois. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.Responses flooded in almost immediately.

“Finally!”

“Yes! Count me in!”

“Hallelujah!”

“It’s about time!”

Those enthusiastic replies revealed a deep and long-held desire for professional unity among Ghanaian healthcare workers who, despite serving in different facilities and communities, shared a common heritage and purpose.

Sensing the overwhelming momentum, Founder and President Laura Cynthia Boakye, together with Co-Founder Mansa Larbi and other early pioneers, convened the group’s first virtual Zoom meeting just thirteen days later, on February 23, 2025.

That gathering would prove historic.

As participants logged on from homes, hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and healthcare institutions across the state, the founders quickly recognized the immense potential before them. The virtual meeting room was filled with an impressive blend of talent, experience, and leadership, representing every level of the nursing profession.

From Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses to advanced practice clinicians, administrators, educators, and doctoral-prepared experts, the depth of expertise was undeniable.

What began as a simple online meeting soon became the foundation of a licensed professional organization dedicated to promoting health, wellness, and professional excellence while empowering communities through education, advocacy, mentorship, and compassionate care.

Today, that small founding group has evolved into a vibrant network of 240 healthcare professionals, united by a shared commitment to service and collective advancement.

“We Care and Serve with Joy”

Under its guiding motto, “We Care and Serve with Joy,” GNAI wasted no time moving from vision to action. The association rapidly transitioned from virtual planning sessions to meaningful community engagement, establishing itself as a trusted healthcare resource .

In her historical account, President Boakye detailed a record of achievement that many organizations spend decades working toward. To date, GNAI has:

  • Pioneered Digital Health Education: Hosted more than eight monthly virtual health education programs, delivering critical healthcare information and professional insights to over 800 participants.
  • Delivered Direct Community Care: Organized more than twenty community outreach initiatives, providing health screenings, education, and support services to over 600 individuals.
  • Fought Global Malnutrition: Partnered with the internationally recognized Feed My Starving Children initiative, helping assemble more than 200 boxes of food, enough to provide daily meals for approximately 120 children for an entire year.
  • Funded Critical Research and Local Aid: Supported UIC Cancer Research through fundraising efforts while organizing donation drives that supplied coats, shoes, and clothing to charitable organizations serving families across the Naperville community.
  • Elevated Public Health Awareness: Led awareness campaigns addressing autism, cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention, helping educate communities and promote healthier outcomes.

What stands out most is not merely the scale of these accomplishments, but the speed with which they were achieved.

In less than two years, GNAI established itself as far more than a professional association. It became a vehicle for service, empowerment, and social impact.

A Modern Legacy of Florence Nightingale

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of GNAI’s journey is the force driving its success: volunteerism.

As detailed in President Boakye’s narrative, the association’s expansive footprint has been fueled almost entirely by the generosity, dedication, and commitment of its 240 members. Through monthly dues and personal financial contributions, members support many of the programs and initiatives that have become hallmarks of the organization.

These healthcare professionals do not merely serve during their working hours. After demanding shifts in hospitals and healthcare facilities, they continue to volunteer their time, expertise, and resources in service of their communities.

It is a spirit that recalls the enduring legacy of Florence Nightingale while giving it a distinctly modern expression.

Today, GNAI stands as a powerful example of what can happen when skilled professionals unite behind a common purpose. Beyond advancing healthcare, the organization has nurtured leadership, uncovered hidden talents, strengthened professional networks, and created lifelong bonds among its members.

As attendees departed the inauguration ceremony with the commemorative brochure tucked under their arms, they carried away more than a publication. They carried the story of a movement.

A movement conceived through the vision of Founder and President Laura Cynthia Boakye, strengthened through the partnership of Co-Founder Mansa Larbi, and sustained by hundreds of healthcare professionals committed to service above self.

From a single text message to a flourishing association 240 members strong, the Ghana Nurses Association Illinois has become a testament to the transformative power of unity, leadership, and purpose.

And if its remarkable beginnings are any indication, this is not merely the story of how GNAI started. It is the opening chapter of a legacy that is still unfolding. A legacy of healthcare excellence, community empowerment, and servant leadership that will inspire future generations long after the inaugural celebrations have faded into history.
