Accra, Ghana – The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health has successfully held an emergency meeting with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), leading to the suspension of the ongoing strike action by the association. The meeting concluded satisfactorily, with both parties agreeing to prioritize the best interests of patients and the nation.

The Committee, led by Chairman Mark Kurt Nawaane and Ranking Member Nana Ayew Afriyie, engaged in negotiations and appealed to the GRNMA to call off their industrial action. Nawaane also urged the GRNMA and other aggrieved associations to consider involving the legislative arm of government through petitions to the Speaker for intervention, as a means to prevent future strikes.

Mr. Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, the GRNMA First Vice President, expressed the association’s appreciation to the Committee for addressing their grievances and for the assurance of negotiations with the Executive to implement their demands. Following this engagement, the GRNMA officially called off its strike and commended the Committee for its proactive initiative.

Notable attendees at the meeting included Minister of Health Kwabena Minta Akandoh, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission Dr. George Smith-Graham.
