Parliamentary proceedings were thrown into disarray as a fierce confrontation erupted between the Majority and Minority sides over the continuation of the day’s business.
The chaos followed Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to defer a ruling on the Kpandai seat vacancy, prompting Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) to insist that the House be immediately adjourned. The confrontation escalated as Minority MPs repeatedly obstructed Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga whenever he attempted to speak, particularly in response to calls for the withdrawal of a letter from the Clerk of Parliament declaring the Kpandai seat vacant.
The letter, dated December 4, 2025, was addressed to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa following a High Court ruling that ordered a rerun of the Kpandai election. Dressed in black, Minority members voiced their protest by chanting patriotic songs, banging tables, and hooting at the Clerk of Parliament.
Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who unsuccessfully attempted to maintain order. Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh described the communication as “out of place” and “unfortunate,” arguing it constituted a violation of the rule of law and demanded its withdrawal. Faced with the escalating disruption, Speaker Bagbin was compelled to temporarily suspend proceedings, urging members to adhere to standing orders and indicating that the contentious matter would be resolved after hearing from the leaders of the house.
