Parliament has officially approved a GH¢9.8 billion allocation for the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to finance critical educational projects and programs throughout the 2026 fiscal year.
Under the approved formula, the Free Senior High School policy received the largest share of the funding, totaling GH¢4.2 billion, while the tertiary sub-sector was allocated GH¢1.5 billion. Within the tertiary budget, GH¢300 million is specifically designated to support the GETFund scholarship scheme, covering both continuing students and new sponsorships for those pursuing academic programs locally and abroad.
To address infrastructure gaps, the 2026 plan sets aside GH¢230 million for the completion of existing basic school projects and an additional GH¢310 million for the construction of new educational facilities across the country.
Alongside these financial approvals, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has directed the Health Committee to launch a formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Charles Amissah.
Describing the fatality as both needless and unacceptable, the Speaker emphasized that such occurrences should not be tolerated within the national healthcare system. He called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability, stressing that severe sanctions must be applied against any individuals found to be negligent.
The directive underscores a heightened parliamentary focus on institutional oversight and the protection of citizen rights within public services, even as the house moves forward with significant budgetary commitments to the nation’s educational transformation.
