Parliament yesterday saw two (2) significant legislative actions: the approval of the 2026 Budget Estimates for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ratification of a groundbreaking Labour Mobility Agreement with Qatar.
According to Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the budget approval will enable crucial reforms.
These include enhancing conditions of service for Ghana’s foreign service officers, transitioning the Ministry from costly rentals to owning diplomatic properties globally, continuous modernization of the affordable passport administration system, and implementing an overarching strategy to bolster Ghana’s international image.
Furthermore, the ratified, far-reaching Labour Mobility Agreement with Qatar, secured under Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution, is set to significantly benefit Ghanaian workers.
The Minister confirmed that the agreement guarantees better and protected conditions of service for Ghanaians seeking employment in Qatar. Prospective workers are now entitled to improved salaries, guaranteed accommodation, medical allowances, comprehensive insurance, and legally binding contracts.
