ILE-IFE, NIGERIA—Preparations have reached an advanced stage in Osun State, Nigeria, as one of Africa’s most respected traditional rulers prepares to confer a rare and distinguished honour on President John Dramani Mahama.
His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, will today, Monday, 15 December 2025, bestow upon Mr. Mahama the prestigious title of “Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source”—a title that translates as “A President who reorganises the global space for humanity.”
The exceptional honour is a profound acknowledgement of President Mahama’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism, global equity, and his tireless advocacy for a fair international order that prioritises cooperation, sustainable development, and amplifies the voices of developing nations. His recent address to the United Nations, which focused on confronting global challenges from climate change to economic inequality, was cited as an example of his vision for a more just world.
The historic palace grounds in Ile-Ife, the spiritual heartland of the Yoruba people, came alive with activity on Sunday afternoon as the community awaited the arrival of Ghana’s former leader. Colourful canopies were erected, and elaborate decorations, including prominent portraits of President Mahama, adorned the venue. Local residents and dignitaries expressed excitement about hosting a president who has consistently demonstrated respect for African traditional institutions and cultural heritage.
This honour further cements President Mahama’s deep connection with the Yoruba people; he already holds the esteemed title of Aare Atolase of Offa, conferred upon him by the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State in October 2015. The conferment of the Aare Atayeto Oodua title is expected to significantly strengthen the already robust cultural and diplomatic bonds between Nigeria and Ghana, two West African nations with shared histories and complementary visions for regional development.
