The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on Ghanaians to demonstrate heightened patriotism and civic responsibility as the nation marks Constitution Day on January 7, 2026. Celebrating the anniversary of the 1992 Constitution and the birth of the Fourth Republic, the Commission announced this year’s theme as “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.”

In a press statement signed by Chairperson Kathleen Addy, the NCCE highlighted the dual nature of digital platforms, noting that while they have expanded citizen engagement, they also pose significant threats through misinformation, the abuse of freedoms, and the erosion of social cohesion.

As Ghana undertakes a historic constitutional review process, the Commission urged the Executive and other arms of government to expedite their respective roles to ensure the success of the amendments. The NCCE commended the Constitution Review Committee for its progress and emphasized that the 1992 Constitution remains the supreme law of the land, binding on all persons in both physical and digital spaces.

The statement particularly appealed to the government to prioritize public education so that all citizens can fully understand the content and implications of the proposed draft review before it is finalized.

To mark the occasion, the Commission revealed plans to intensify nationwide civic education programs across educational institutions, communities, and digital media platforms. These initiatives are designed to deepen public understanding of constitutional rights and the duties of responsible digital citizenship. Ms. Addy specifically encouraged the youth and digital content creators to act as ambassadors of democratic values, urging them to use technology as a tool for national unity rather than a medium for intolerance.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing a culture of democracy and called for collective effort to protect the nation’s constitutional order in an increasingly digital world.
