The Greater Accra Regional Chapter of the National Association of Registered Midwives–Ghana (NARM‑GAR) has issued a strongly worded condemnation following the circulation of a disturbing video showing a midwife being physically assaulted by a patient’s relative at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and has sparked renewed calls for urgent reforms to protect frontline health workers.

According to the Association, the video — now widely shared across social media — captures the midwife being “physically assaulted and manhandled… in the line of duty,” a description taken directly from the press release. The leadership expressed outrage, describing the act as unacceptable and emblematic of a growing national crisis of violence against healthcare professionals.

A Threat to Healthcare Delivery

NARM‑GAR emphasized that midwives and nurses continue to work under intense pressure, often sacrificing personal comfort to safeguard mothers, newborns, and families. The Association warned that the increasing frequency of attacks is creating an atmosphere of fear that undermines quality healthcare delivery.

The press release notes that such violence “threatens the safety and dignity of healthcare workers” and inflicts emotional and psychological trauma on victims, their families, and colleagues.

Calls for Government Intervention

The Association is demanding decisive action from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, urging both institutions to publicly condemn the attack and take a firm stance against all forms of workplace violence.

NARM‑GAR argues that official silence only emboldens perpetrators and weakens national efforts to ensure safe working environments for health professionals.

Key Demands from NARM‑GAR

The Association outlined several urgent actions needed to address the crisis:

  • Full investigation into the Tema Polyclinic incident
  • Legal action against all individuals found culpable
  • Strengthened security across health facilities nationwide
  • A national zero‑tolerance policy on workplace violence against healthcare workers
  • Enhanced psychological support for victims of assault and abuse

These measures, the Association insists, are essential to restoring confidence and ensuring that health workers can perform their duties without fear.

Solidarity with the Victim and the Profession

NARM‑GAR reaffirmed its solidarity with the assaulted midwife and all healthcare workers who have suffered similar attacks. The leadership pledged to continue advocating for their rights, safety, and professional dignity.

The release ends with a powerful reminder: “An attack on a healthcare provider is an attack on the entire healthcare system.”

Signatories

  • Jessie Allotey, Regional General Secretary
  • Rosetta N. Boakye, Regional Chairperson

Both leaders called on the media, government agencies, and the public to join the fight against the rising tide of violence in Ghana’s health facilities.
