Chicago, IL — April 16, 2026: The Redemption Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) in Chicago welcomed a historic and deeply symbolic visit from the Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, marking his first pastoral engagement in the city since assuming office. His presence continues a long line of moderators who have visited the congregation from its earliest beginnings through its elevation to full district status. An evolution he celebrated as a testament to perseverance, mission, and divine favor.

Addressing a moderately attended evening service, the Moderator spoke with a calm authority that carried both warmth and urgency. Drawing on anecdotes and historical milestones, he reminded congregants that the PCG’s global membership, now over 1.5 million strong, is expected to reach 2 million by the church’s bicentenary in December 2028. He described the coming two years as a sacred window of preparation, noting that the church’s story has always been shaped by defining anniversaries: “1828, 1878, 1928, 1978, 2026, 2028, these are not just dates; they are markers of who we have become.”

Work on the Kuntunse project has already begun, with the smallest of the planned conference centers, an approximately 1,500‑seater facility, expected to be completed by December. The larger 5,000‑capacity auditorium, together with accompanying hostels, will follow in subsequent phases. He urged the faithful to embrace unity, discipline, and renewed commitment, commending the Chicago District for its growth and urging them to “stay focused” as they contribute to the church’s global mission. He also encouraged every member to participate in the Bicentennial Congress in December 2028, calling it a once‑in‑a‑generation gathering that will shape the next century of the PCG.. District Minister and host pastor Rev. Sam Okyere‑Mireku delivered a concise but impactful progress report, highlighting the district’s 591 members, its strong leadership core, and its ambitious agenda for growth. He emphasized the need to validate membership data, accelerate church‑planting efforts in Detroit, Rochester, and Waukegan, and complete a feasibility study for a proposed daycare or school using available head‑station facilities. His remarks underscored the district’s alignment with the PCG’s “Agenda 2 Million” and its commitment to evangelism, discipleship, and sustainable development.

The evening’s atmosphere was elevated by the Echoes of Glory Choir, whose stirring Ghanaian spiritual melodies filled the sanctuary and drew enthusiastic appreciation from the congregation. Their performance added cultural depth and emotional resonance to a night already rich with purpose and celebration.

The service was attended by senior clergy, including Rt. Rev. Dr. A.N.O. Kwaakye, Moderator, PCG; Rev. Sam Okyere‑Mireku, host Minister; and Rev. C.B. Appenteng, Chairperson of the North America and Australia Presbyteries (NAAP). Their collective presence signaled the significance of the moment for the Chicago District, which now stands poised to play a meaningful role in the PCG’s historic 2026–2028 milestone period.

The Moderator’s visit, rooted in history, charged with vision, and anchored in mission, will be remembered as a defining moment for the Chicago District. As the church marches toward its bicentenary, the call to unity, growth, and faithful service rings louder than ever.
