A dramatic breakthrough has emerged in the case of the newborn stolen from the Mamprobi Polyclinic, after police arrested a 33‑year‑old woman at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital with a baby believed to be the missing child.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the Dansoman Divisional Commander, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed that the arrest followed an intensive manhunt launched after the baby’s disappearance.
According to police reports, the case was first filed on February 17, 2026, around 10 a.m., when Abigail Dzukunu and Henrietta Abbey Blessed reported that an unidentified woman,initially believed to be disguised as a nurse, had taken a newborn from the post-natal ward of the Mamprobi Polyclinic.
The baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, told investigators she had delivered a baby boy on February 14, 2026. Three days later, a woman dressed in a peach‑coloured nurse’s uniform allegedly took the child under the guise of administering medication, only to vanish moments later.
Police officers visited the facility, obtained statements from staff and witnesses, and immediately activated a search operation across Accra.
Their efforts paid off early Wednesday morning. At about 3:40 a.m., officers arrested Latifa Salifu, a 33‑year‑old cloth seller, on the premises of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. She was found holding a baby whose age and appearance matched that of the missing child.
During interrogation, Salifu claimed she had delivered at the hospital and had been discharged due to a lack of available beds. However, hospital authorities confirmed that no such delivery was recorded, casting serious doubt on her account.
Police say the suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue. Meanwhile, arrangements are underway to place the baby under hospital care for medical evaluation, safety, and proper identification.
Superintendent Obeng assured the public that the police remain committed to uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the abduction and bringing all responsible parties to justice.
