In a decisive demonstration of continuity and commitment to national security infrastructure, the Mahama administration’s flagship military accommodation project at Ajumako has reached an impressive stage of development, following a high‑level inspection by the Minister for Defence, Honourable Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu.
Their visit on Thursday, 10 September 2026, offered a firsthand assessment of the pace, quality, and scope of work on what is set to become one of Ghana’s most modern and multipurpose military bases. The Ajumako Barracks, designed to anchor the Ghana Armed Forces’ expansion into newly created regions, is emerging as a strategic installation that blends operational readiness with dignified living conditions for personnel.
Brigadier General Jonas Agyei Wiafe, Director General of Engineer Services, provided a detailed briefing on the project’s progress, outlining the completion levels of key structural components and the integration of new additions requested after the initial design phase. His update underscored the disciplined engineering approach guiding the development.
Honourable Adjei commended Imperial Homes, the project contractor, for maintaining momentum despite the expanded scope. He emphasized the government’s expectation of strict compliance with technical specifications and quality benchmarks, urging the consulting team to enforce standards without compromise. His remarks reinforced the administration’s position that military infrastructure must reflect excellence, durability, and strategic foresight.
Lieutenant General Agyapong echoed the commendations, noting that the Ajumako and Dambai bases form part of a broader national defence expansion drive aimed at strengthening presence, mobility, and response capability across all regions. He assured the contractor of the Military High Command’s full cooperation to ensure timely completion, describing the project as a cornerstone of Ghana’s evolving defence architecture.
Upon completion, the installation will be christened Erskine Barracks, honouring the late Major General Alexander Erskine (Rtd), a distinguished former Chief of the Army Staff and former Commander of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation in the Middle East. The naming reflects the Armed Forces’ tradition of memorializing exemplary leadership and service.
The inspection team included senior officers from both the General Headquarters and Army Headquarters, underscoring the national significance of the project and the institutional commitment to its success.
This development marks a major stride in Ghana’s defence modernization agenda, reinforcing the state’s resolve to provide its military with infrastructure befitting its mandate and sacrifices.
