In the long and storied relationship between Ghana and Lincoln University,an institution that proudly celebrates its connection to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, few moments have been as jarring, as discourteous, and as profoundly disappointing as the University’s eleventh‑hour reversal regarding the scheduled visit of President John Dramani Mahama. What should have been a dignified academic celebration has instead been marred by an avoidable lapse in institutional judgment.

Lincoln University extended an invitation. Lincoln University conducted a full walkthrough with the Ghana Embassy. Lincoln University finalized logistics, protocols, and ceremonial arrangements. And Lincoln University reaffirmed its commitment as recently as last week. Yet, with the President of Ghana already on American soil, having honored the University’s invitation in good faith, the institution abruptly raised concerns that it claims were somehow invisible during its own due diligence.

This is not merely an administrative misstep. It is an affront. A disgrace to the 30 million people of Ghana and all people of African descent.

A sitting president of a sovereign nation does not travel on impulse. Diplomatic engagements are not arranged on a whim. Every detail, from security to protocol to international coordination, requires precision, respect, and mutual trust. To withdraw support at the last possible moment is to disregard the dignity of the office, the nation it represents, and the longstanding ties between Ghana and an institution that once prided itself on its Pan‑African legacy.

Lincoln University’s explanation—that concerns were suddenly raised by a group regarding President Mahama’s perceived position on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, rings hollow when placed against the timeline. These issues did not emerge yesterday. They have been the subject of global discussion for months. If the University believed these concerns were disqualifying, it had every opportunity to address them before issuing an invitation, before conducting a walkthrough, before confirming arrangements, and certainly before the President boarded a plane.

Instead, the University waited until the threshold of the event, when diplomatic, financial, logistical, and ceremonial commitments had already been made,to raise objections. That is not principled caution. It is institutional negligence.

Moreover, the premise of the objection is itself flawed. The concerns being cited relate to an ongoing legislative process in Ghana, not a unilateral executive action. Ghana’s democracy, like that of the United States, allows for debate, dissent, and deliberation. No single individual, including the President, dictates the outcome of parliamentary processes. To attribute the entire legislative landscape to one man is not only inaccurate; it is intellectually carelessness and dishonesty.

President Mahama has a long and internationally recognized record of democratic leadership, respect for human rights, and engagement on complex societal issues. Institutions across the world have honored him for precisely these qualities. For Lincoln University to imply otherwise, without dialogue, without clarification, and without the courtesy of timely communication, is deeply troubling.

This moment calls for more than quiet disappointment. It calls for a firm, principled rebuke.

Lincoln University’s actions undermine the very values it claims to uphold: intellectual rigor, historical awareness, and global engagement. They also risk eroding the trust that has bound the institution to Ghana for generations.

The Embassy’s statement is measured, diplomatic, and gracious. But the Ghanaian public, the African diaspora, and all who value fairness must say plainly what diplomacy cannot: this was mishandled, this was disrespectful, and this must never happen again.

If Lincoln University wishes to preserve its legacy as a beacon of Pan‑African scholarship and solidarity, it must reflect deeply on this moment. It must confront the inconsistency between its professed values and its actions. And it must recommit itself to the principles of respect, transparency, and integrity that once made it a trusted partner to Ghana and the broader African world.

Anything less would be an abdication of the very history the University so proudly invokes.

  1. I can’t believe an educational institution of such excellent recognition can be so callous and disrespectful to a sitting president of a sovereign state!

Ghanaians must with all seriousness rebuke the current administration of the Lincoln University. It just goes to show what those of us with academic degrees from institutions of higher learning suffer in the United States!

The disrespect, due to the spoken English with an accent reflects on the American public. Having a different spoken accent should not reflect on the quality of the message!

This reminds me some years back when I had written an academic proposal to the head of a department in a company that I was working for. After my presentation, my immediate boss came over to me and instead of thanking me and appreciating the proposal, which was meant to improve the qualitative aspects of the Accounting Department, he instead said the following to me! “ Clement, are you sure you wrote the proposal that you presented to the boss?” I was very much offended, and my simple response to him was as follows: “ The written English language has no accent,” and I left it alone at that.

Accordingly to his understanding, speaking the English language with a different accent reflects on the intelligence and the inability to speak the English language with an American accent!

The simple question to the administration of the Lincoln University is this, “How would the American public feel and react if the situation were reversed, and the same situation was done to sitting American President?

I think the current administration of the Lincoln University should be rebuked and fired by the Board of Directors of the University!

This is really an outrageous mess!
