BURR RIDGE, IL — The Marriott Hotel in Burr Ridge came alive with celebration, gratitude, and a strong sense of community on October 10, 2026, as the Ghana Nurses Association Illinois Inc.(GNAI) held its inaugural fundraising dinner.

Approximately 400 guests attended the landmark event, including 240 dedicated members of the association and numerous supporters from across the community.

In the true spirit of Akwaaba, GNAI President Laura Cynthia Boakye, RN, BSN, warmly welcomed attendees and dignitaries. Among the distinguished guests were Mr. Effah Ameyaw, President of the Ghana National Council, and Vice President Ms. Ethel Adongo.

Also present to support the occasion were Paa Kwasi Sam , former President of the Ghana National Council, Mama Nunyati, Queen of the Ewe Association, Nana Abayie, and Nana Durowaa, Asantefuohene and Hemaa of Chicago, underscoring the strong cultural and community partnerships that continue to strengthen the association’s mission.

A Powerful Tribute to the Nursing Profession

In a heartfelt keynote address, President Boakye offered a candid look into the realities of the nursing profession, moving beyond the polished public image often associated with healthcare.

She reminded the audience that while patients frequently see calm and compassionate professionals at the bedside, they rarely witness the sacrifices behind the scenes: rushed meals, missed holidays, and twelve-hour shifts that often extend to sixteen hours.

Boakye emphasized that nurses consistently place the needs of others above their own, frequently spending time away from their families to answer the call of duty.

“Nursing is a calling,” she noted, stressing that the profession is practiced not only with the hands but with the whole person. She praised her colleagues for their unwavering dedication and reaffirmed GNAI’s commitment to caring and serving with joy and compassion.

Building an Organization on Service and Sacrifice

Although GNAI has existed for less than two years, the organization has already achieved remarkable milestones.

Attendees were encouraged to review commemorative publications detailing the association’s journey and accomplishments since its inception.

Ms. Boakye highlighted that the organization is built entirely on a spirit of altruism and service. She described its members as individuals with “hearts of pure gold” who dedicate their time, talent, and resources to uplifting others.

She proudly emphasized that no member receives personal financial benefit from the organization. Instead, every contribution and membership due is reinvested directly into community programs and initiatives.

Addressing concerns from some who considered the association’s $150 gate ticket fee too high, she pointed to the significant impact such collective contributions can achieve. She stressed that when members invest together, the organization gains the capacity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those it serves.

Honoring the Unsung Heroes

A central theme of the evening was appreciation for the many individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes.

President Boakye expressed profound gratitude to the inauguration committee, noting that many members routinely completed demanding 12- to 16-hour nursing shifts before joining late-night Zoom meetings to coordinate the event’s details.

She also acknowledged the families of nurses for their patience and sacrifice, recognizing the critical support they provide that enables healthcare professionals to serve their communities.

Special recognition was given to the association’s patrons, whom she described as a fearless backbone that stands firmly behind the organization in every circumstance.

A Night to Remember

As the evening drew to a close, attendees were encouraged to enjoy the food, music, and fellowship. In a lighthearted moment, Boakye invited guests to dance, celebrate, and even allow exhausted night-shift nurses to catch up on much-needed rest if necessary.

By the end of the gala, one message resonated clearly throughout the room: the Ghana Nurses Association Illinois had not only marked a successful inauguration but had firmly established its commitment to care, serve, and uplift communities across Illinois.

Under the leadership of Laura Cynthia Boakye, GNAI continues to demonstrate that when compassion, service, and community come together, extraordinary things can happen.
