The Kome-Shime Traditional Council has installed Togbi Lakle Ashiapim II as Dufia of Tunu and Mama Megbenya I as Queen Mother of Tunu at a colourful traditional coronation ceremony held at Tunu-Gblife in the Volta Region on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
The historic ceremony was organised by the Blu-Dzevie Clan of Anlo, the Lakle Royal Stool of Tunu, the Chief Makers and the people of Tunu-Gblife.
The newly installed traditional leaders were supported by Agbotadua Agbenyegah and Mama Nugorgbea Dotsey Dagedzi, who were also recognised as part of the new traditional leadership.
The ceremony brought together traditional rulers, queen mothers, community leaders, dignitaries, media practitioners, friends and well-wishers from across Ghana.
Among the distinguished traditional leaders who attended were Togbi Nyaho Tamakloe IV, Paramount Chief of Kome-Shime, Miafiaga of Anlo and Dufia of Whuti; Togbi Adelashi Kotor II, Dufia of Atiteti-Fuveme; Togbi Dayifo Atsiblago II, Chief of Srogboe; Mama Agumedzonu II of Whuti; Mama Dzotsi IV of Anloga; and Mama Ewui Amegashi II of Keta, alongside several other invited guests.
As part of the coronation proceedings, Togbi Lakle Ashiapim II and Mama Megbenya I paid homage to Togbi Nyaho Tamakloe IV, Paramount Chief of the Kome-Shime Traditional Area, and swore allegiance to him.
Their allegiance was accepted, formally recognising the newly installed leaders within the traditional structure of the Kome-Shime Traditional Area.
The ceremony was characterised by traditional rites, cultural displays, music and dancing, creating an atmosphere that reflected the rich history and cultural heritage of the people of Tunu-Gblife.
The event also proceeded despite reported attempts by some individuals associated with Togbi Tsidi III, described by the organisers as a sub-chief of Anyanui, to prevent the programme from taking place. The coronation eventually went ahead successfully and was celebrated in grand style by the people of Tunu-Gblife and their invited guests.
In his address following his installation, Togbi Lakle Ashiapim II, Dufia of Tunu, called on the people to remain united and work together for the progress and development of the community.
He said the people of Tunu were one family with a shared heritage, a common land and collective aspirations for the future.
«“We are one family bound by a shared heritage, living on the same cherished land, and holding the same hopes for tomorrow. Let us remain firmly united.”»
The Dufia stressed that peace must remain at the centre of community life and urged residents to resolve minor misunderstandings peacefully while bringing major disputes before the palace.
He cautioned against allowing anger and disagreements to destroy the harmony of the community.
Togbi Lakle Ashiapim II said the development of Tunu would require the active participation of everyone, including farmers, teachers, traders, the youth and the elderly.
He identified safe drinking water, quality education, vibrant markets, accessible healthcare and employment opportunities for young people as some of the key areas that require attention.
According to him, the traditional leadership would work with the people to pursue practical and sustainable development initiatives for the community.
He noted that development would not happen overnight but expressed confidence that steady work, determination and unity could move Tunu forward.
«“When any part of Tunu is left behind, we all suffer. But when we plan and labour as one, there is nothing we cannot achieve,” he said.»
Togbi Lakle Ashiapim II and Mama Megbenya I pledged to serve the people with fairness, integrity and compassion.
The new leaders promised to listen to the concerns of residents and work tirelessly to promote the welfare and development of Tunu-Gblife.
They also appealed to residents to support the traditional leadership with their active participation, commitment and prayers.
The coronation marked a significant moment in the traditional history of Tunu-Gblife, bringing together chiefs, queen mothers, royals, community members and dignitaries to celebrate the culture and heritage of the people.
