The Life and Legacy of Imoro Yamusah Montana
Born around 1915 in the village of Mankargu in Daboya District, Imoro Montana’s life was a testament to resilience and quiet strength. His father, Simani, a respected figure who migrated to Fandu, was appointed Montana by the Zangbolong Na—a title that carried significance in the community. Though formally uneducated, Simani ensured his children pursued their trades and livelihoods with diligence.
Imoro’s elder brother, Yamusah Montana, became a guiding force in his life, bringing him to Tamale to mentor him in the art of long-distance trade. Together, they built a strong foundation in the bustling Saakasaka neighborhood, where they made a home filled with tradition and perseverance. As trade slowed in the 1980s, Imoro shifted his focus to agriculture, working as a middleman for the Ghana Cocoa Marketing Board before retiring to a modest mud house in Katarga Yapala.
Until his passing earlier this year, he remained the revered head of the Montana Yili household, a pillar of quiet leadership and wisdom.
“My father always told me, life is a game, and God is the referee. He once joked that he was enjoying his ‘extra time’—and I guess, in the end, the whistle finally blew,” Dr. Montana shared with a bittersweet smile, recalling his father’s sharp humor and strong spirit.

With a legacy spanning six wives and sixteen children, Imoro’s impact continues to ripple through generations. His story is one of humility, devotion, and resilience—a man who embraced simplicity yet nurtured great wisdom.
As the community came together to pray for his soul, it became evident that Imoro Montana was more than a father; he was a guardian of tradition, a storyteller of his time, and an embodiment of values passed down with unwavering grace.
