Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has conducted a series of working visits to state-owned transport companies to address recent disruptions in the transportation sector and assess operational challenges. During her visits to Metro Mass Transit Ltd. and the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), the Vice President conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s assurance that the government is prepared to provide new, high-occupancy vehicles to strengthen public transit capabilities nationwide. This intervention is aimed at providing sustainable solutions to the logistical pressures currently facing commuters across the country.
At Metro Mass Transit Ltd., leadership informed the Vice President that the company is currently operating at only 60% of its total vehicle capacity, with a fleet of approximately 400 buses serving a growing national population. Officials noted that the company has faced significant challenges due to a lack of fleet additions over recent years, leaving a substantial portion of their vehicles in critical condition. In response, the government has committed to removing obstacles hindering the company’s potential and will provide the necessary resources to restore and expand the fleet to improve service delivery for all citizens.
The delegation also engaged with GAPTE, the managers of the Ayalolo service, where discussions centered on the urgent need for retooling and revamping the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system. GAPTE officials reported progress in reclaiming key terminals previously lost, which is expected to enhance operational efficiency. The Vice President highlighted the importance of the Ayalolo service for the working class, noting that its fares remain approximately 20% lower than standard public transport rates. She concluded by emphasizing that the government is working with both state and private providers to ensure that commuters are treated with dignity through expanded and reliable transit options.
