The Government of Ghana has vowed to take firm disciplinary action against personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) following the physical assault of Samuel Addo, a journalist with Class Media Group. Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Fosu officially condemned the attack, describing the conduct of the officers as “most unacceptable” and labeling those involved as “rogue elements” whose behavior will not be tolerated.
The incident occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, while Mr. Addo was covering a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region. According to the journalist, the altercation began after he attempted to film fire officers allegedly assaulting civilians at the scene. Despite identifying himself as a member of the press,
Mr. Addo claims he was set upon by approximately ten officers who restrained him, held him by the neck, and subjected him to physical abuse.
Beyond the physical assault, Mr. Addo reported the loss of GHS 10,200 during the struggle. He stated that his belt was torn and his mobile phone was seized, though the device was later recovered through the intervention of the Member of Parliament for the area, Phyllis Naa Koryor.
The journalist has since reported the matter to the police, citing that a significant portion of the cash he was carrying remains missing.
Mr. Addo has been issued a medical form to seek treatment for his injuries as investigations begin. The government’s stance, articulated by Mr. Kwakye Fosu, emphasizes a commitment to protecting press freedom and ensuring that security and emergency personnel are held accountable for their conduct in public spaces.
