ACCRA – In a significant move to bolster the nation’s secondary education infrastructure, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government has successfully secured a $300 million facility dedicated to the comprehensive upgrade of 50 Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country.
The funding is earmarked for the “Secondary Education Improvement Project,” an initiative designed to expand access to quality education and modernize aging facilities in underserved communities.
Scaling Up Excellence
According to the President, the facility will focus on the construction of new classroom blocks, state-of-the-art science laboratories, and improved residential facilities for both students and staff. The goal is to ensure that these “legacy” schools can meet the demands of a growing student population while maintaining high academic standards.
“Our commitment is to ensure that every Ghanaian child, regardless of their geographical location, has access to a world-class learning environment,” President Mahama stated during the announcement.
Key Schools Identified for Upgrades
While the full list encompasses 50 institutions nationwide, the following schools have been prioritized for the initial phase of the expansion and rehabilitation works. They are :
- Wesley Girls’ High School
- Mfantsipim School
- Aburi Girls’ Senior High School
- Achimota School
- Tamale Senior High School
- Prempeh College
Impact on Enrollment
The Ministry of Education anticipates that this $300 million investment will create thousands of new seats for students, directly addressing the congestion issues faced by many top-tier institutions. Beyond physical structures, a portion of the funds will be allocated to ICT integration and teacher training programs to ensure the new facilities are utilized to their full potential.
The project is expected to commence within the next fiscal quarter, with contractors being vetted to ensure the highest standards of structural integrity and modern design.
