Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is preparing to usher in a new era of transparency as Minister Mahama Ayariga unveils plans to introduce live televised coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
The initiative, which is being shaped through a partnership with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), is designed to deepen public trust, strengthen accountability, and expand citizen participation in the decentralisation process.
In a public statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, September fifteen, the Minister explained that the programme aligns directly with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which mandates openness and civic engagement at the district level. By broadcasting Assembly deliberations, the Ministry aims to bring local decision making out of closed halls and into the national consciousness.
According to Mr Ayariga, the live coverage will allow Ghanaians to witness how their local leaders debate policies, allocate resources, and respond to community concerns. He noted that the initiative is expected to boost civic education ahead of the District Level Elections, while also encouraging Assemblies to uphold higher standards of accountability.
The Ministry has also announced logistical support for the rollout, including the procurement of fifty one pickup vehicles to assist the NCCE, GBC, and Regional Spatial Planning Committees in reaching Assemblies across the country.
