May is used to celebrate National Blood Pressure by raising awareness with the power of information. The knowledge is used to fight the unseen, potential risks of high blood pressure. Due to a tendency to show either minor or even no symptoms at all, high blood pressure has earned the nickname “the silent killer.”High blood pressure increases the individual’s risk of heart attack, aneurysm, and internal bleeding. Also, it can cause coronary artery disease,( which is a disease of the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart), kidney failure, vision disturbances, dementia, and strokes. Because symptoms of high blood pressure are rare, half of the people with undiagnosed or untreated hypertension die of heart disease.
In this vein, the Vice President of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, GNC, Dr. Eunice Araba-Otuwa Cromwell DNP, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, disseminated information about the disease on WhatsApp platforms in the community. We reproduce her posts below:
High blood pressure creates continual stress on your body, as the force of the blood flowing through your arteries is too high. This is influenced by both the amount of blood your heart pumps and how narrow your arteries are. More blood creates more force, and narrow arteries create more force as well.

Often, high blood pressure carries no symptoms and is only found through routine screenings at a doctor’s office. Whether or not you have symptoms, high blood pressure damages the circulatory system, which raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, kidney disease, vision loss, and other types of heart disease. Being aware of your blood pressure levels and taking steps to lower high blood pressure is important to your overall health.
