The Ghana Nurses Association Illinois (GNAI), in collaboration with the Ghanaian Pharmacists Association of the Midwest, opened its 2026 Community Health Education Series with an impressive and inspiring start. More than 100 members of the Ghanaian community in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs joined the virtual session on hypertension on March 15, 2026, demonstrating a strong commitment to learning, prevention, and collective well‑being.

GNAI President Laura Cynthia Boakye described the event as a great success, praising the community’s engagement and the dedication of the healthcare professionals who made the program possible. She emphasized that caring for the community remains at the heart of GNAI’s mission, and the turnout reaffirmed the importance of accessible, culturally grounded health education.

The session delivered essential information on hypertension, one of the most serious and often overlooked health challenges affecting African and diaspora populations. Through clear explanations and practical guidance, the presenters empowered attendees with knowledge that can save lives and strengthen families. Patron Gladys Odoi, APRN, FNP‑BC, CWP, MSN, RN, Vera Appiah‑Dankwah, BNB, MSN, AG‑ACNP, and Pharmacist Levette Owusu‑Ansah, PharmD, BCGP, offered expert insights that resonated deeply with participants, increasing awareness and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices.

The impact of the program was felt immediately across the community. One participant captured the sentiment beautifully in a social‑media post that has since gained wide attention: “A shoutout to the Ghana Illinois Nurses Association and the Pharmaceutical Association for the education on hypertension yesterday. It was very educative. Thank you Dr. Gladys and Dr. Levette; hope in the future we can do it in person. A special shoutout to the moderator Nurse Laura and Nurse Vera for translating so that we could understand it well in our native tongue. Thank you to the entire GNAI who worked behind the scenes to make this happen. We appreciate you.” The message reflects the gratitude and admiration many felt after the session, especially for the cultural sensitivity and linguistic inclusiveness that made the program accessible to all.

The success of this first session reflects the strength of the partnership between GNAI and the Ghanaian Pharmacists Association of the Midwest. Their combined expertise ensures that the community receives well‑rounded, reliable, and relevant health information throughout the year. The commitment of the organizing team, who invested their time, energy, and resources, made this launch a meaningful milestone.

GNAI urges all Ghanaian residents in Chicago and its metropolis to continue participating in the free health education series scheduled for the year. Each session is designed to uplift the community, promote preventive care, and equip families with the tools needed to thrive. The turnout proved that when the community shows up, the impact is powerful.

The next educational session has already been announced, continuing the momentum and expanding the community’s knowledge on another critical health topic:
