THE CONVERSATION THAT COULD SAVE A LIFE
The Ghanaian community in Chicago has been shaken in recent months by sudden, heartbreaking losses, lives cut short without warning, families left searching for answers, and a community grappling with the silent dangers of preventable medical emergencies. In response, the Ghana Nurses Association Illinois (GNAI), in collaboration with the Ghanaian Pharmacists Association of the Midwest (GPHA International), is stepping forward once again with the kind of leadership our community urgently needs.
As part of their March Madness Health Education Series, GNAI is dedicating this Sunday’s session to two topics that strike at the very heart of these tragedies: blood clots and stroke. These conditions often develop quietly, but their impact is swift, devastating, and too often fatal. Yet the truth remains, knowledge, early detection, and timely action can save lives.
Just last week, the session on cholesterol drew more than 100 participants, a powerful sign that our community is hungry for information, ready to learn, and determined to protect one another. This Sunday’s discussion promises to be even more impactful.
This is not just another Zoom meeting. It is a lifeline.
Our experts: Nurse Practitioner Vera Appiah-Dankwah (BNB, MSN, AG-ACNP) and Pharmacist Dr. Richard Nimako Gyasi (PharmD),will break down the warning signs that many people overlook, the everyday habits that increase or reduce risk, and the critical steps to take when seconds matter. They will also guide participants through medication safety, treatment options, and the moments when seeking emergency care can mean the difference between recovery and irreversible damage.
For families who have lost loved ones too soon, for elders who want to stay strong, for young people who believe they are invincible, and for every member of our diaspora who wants to live long and well, this conversation is for you.
The Ghana Nurses Association Illinois has made it clear: caring for our community is what they do best. Their dedication, their expertise, and their commitment to health education are gifts we cannot afford to ignore.
This Sunday, let us show up for ourselves. Let us show up for one another. Let us learn what we need to know to prevent the next sudden loss.
