CHICAGO — Facing a sobering wave of illnesses and bereavement within the local diaspora, the Ghana National Council (GNC) of Metropolitan Chicago has issued a dual-pronged appeal to its members: seek divine intervention through prayer, but do not ignore the power of modern medicine.

The announcement, released by GNC President Effah Ameyaw, comes at a time when the community is grappling with what leadership describes as “numerous illnesses and painful losses” that have touched families across the metropolitan area.

A Call for Spiritual Solidarity:
The Council is officially calling on all Ghanaian churches, mosques, and faith-based organizations throughout Chicago to mobilize their congregations.

The directive asks for dedicated time during services for:

  • Intercession: Praying for the physical healing of those currently battling illness.
  • Comfort: Supporting families who have recently lost loved ones.
  • Protection: Seeking communal strength and wellbeing for the future.

“Let us unite in faith and action by praying for divine intervention while also using the resources available to safeguard our health,” stated President Ameyaw.

“Faith and Action”: The Push for Clinical Care
While the spiritual call is central, the GNC is pairing it with a pragmatic push for physical health.
The leadership is strongly urging community members to utilize the Ghanaian Community Clinic, emphasizing that “faith and action” must go hand-in-hand.
The Council highlighted three critical steps for the community :

  • Health Screenings: Identifying underlying issues before they become emergencies.
  • Medical Guidance: Consulting with professionals who understand the community’s specific needs.
  • Early Treatment: Reducing the impact of illness through timely intervention.

Strength Through Unity
The message from the President’s office was one of both concern and hope, ending with a wish for “healing, peace, and strength” to be restored to the community. By bridging the gap between the pulpit and the clinic, the GNC hopes to create a safety net that addresses both the spiritual and physical tolls the recent months have taken on Chicago’s Ghanaian population.
