Ghana and the United States have renewed their commitment to strengthening trade and investment cooperation following high-level talks at the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, together with Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Victor Emmanuel Smith, held strategic discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Lee Greer. The meeting focused on Ghana’s proposal for a structured cooperation framework aimed at expanding bilateral trade, boosting export opportunities, and attracting increased U.S. investment into key sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
The dialogue also examined recent U.S. tariff measures and their impact on Ghana’s market access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), alongside ongoing deliberations on the programme’s renewal. Ghana underscored the need for tariff flexibility and differentiated treatment to support industrialization, value addition, and job creation, particularly within the textiles, garments, and cocoa processing industries.
Both sides further acknowledged Ghana’s strategic position within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), emphasizing how the agreement enhances Ghana’s role as a gateway for expanded U.S.–Africa commercial engagement.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to exchange draft frameworks and indicative timelines toward establishing a comprehensive, mutually beneficial trade and investment cooperation agreement, signaling a new phase of strengthened economic collaboration.
