Ghana has taken a major step to strengthen its national defence and emergency response capabilities with the signing of a €125.97 million agreement with Airbus Helicopters for the acquisition of four state‑of‑the‑art multi‑mission aircraft. The deal, which includes two H175M helicopters, one ACH175, and one ACH160, represents one of the country’s most significant aviation investments in recent years.
The aircraft will be delivered progressively over a four‑year period beginning in 2026, marking a long‑term commitment to modernising the Ghana Armed Forces and enhancing operational readiness across the Air Force, Navy, and national emergency services.
A Boost to National Security and Humanitarian Response
The newly acquired helicopters are designed to support a wide range of missions, including troop and cargo transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical evacuations, maritime patrols, and disaster relief. Their versatility positions Ghana to respond more effectively to both security threats and humanitarian emergencies.
The H175M models, classified as super‑medium helicopters, are known for their extended range, high payload capacity, and reliability in demanding environments. The ACH160, regarded as one of the most technologically advanced helicopters in the world, offers enhanced safety systems, improved fuel efficiency, and a spacious cabin with significantly larger windows and increased passenger volume.
Part of a Broader Modernisation Agenda
Government officials describe the acquisition as a strategic component of Ghana’s ongoing defence modernisation programme. The initiative aims to equip the Ghana Armed Forces with modern platforms capable of addressing evolving security challenges, including maritime threats, cross‑border crime, natural disasters, and emergency medical needs.
The investment also aligns with Ghana’s long‑term goal of strengthening its aviation infrastructure and improving interoperability among the various branches of the security services.
As the delivery timeline approaches, defence analysts note that the new helicopters will not only enhance Ghana’s operational capabilities but also reinforce the country’s role as a reliable security partner within the West African sub‑region.
