The Government of Ghana has formally notified the Government of Togo of its decision to seek international arbitration to delimit the maritime boundary between the two nations. The move, announced on Friday, February 20, 2026, falls under the framework of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and follows eight years of unsuccessful bilateral negotiations.

According to a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, the decision to pursue legal recourse comes after sustained engagement failed to produce a mutually agreed outcome. The government indicated that the step is intended to prevent the further escalation of incidents that have recently caused tensions between specific institutions of both countries.

By moving the matter to an international tribunal, Ghana aims to reach a lawful and definitive resolution regarding its maritime borders. Officials emphasized that the arbitration is being sought in the spirit of good neighborliness and is intended to preserve and promote the continued cooperation and long-standing diplomatic relations between Ghana and Togo.
