The Ghana Prisons Service has formalized an agreement with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to recruit 5,000 young individuals as Prisons Assistants nationwide. This new initiative, named “Youth in Prisons Service Assistance,” seeks to address youth unemployment while simultaneously bolstering the operational capacity of the Ghana Prisons Service.

Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, the YEA will be responsible for funding the training of all selected beneficiaries and providing them with monthly stipends throughout the program’s duration. The Ghana Prisons Service will develop the training curriculum, conduct the training, and subsequently deploy the trained individuals across the country. A dedicated Programme Management Committee, comprising representatives from both institutions, will oversee the coordination and operational management of the initiative.

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, lauded the President for this policy, expressing gratitude for its focus on tackling unemployment. He emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering on its promises and voiced optimism that the program’s successful implementation will significantly alleviate the nation’s unemployment challenge. This collaboration is part of a wider governmental strategy to combat youth unemployment, building on similar partnerships between YEA and other key institutions like the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service.

The program is anticipated to create vital employment opportunities for young Ghanaians and, in turn, strengthen the Ghana Prisons Service in fulfilling its mandate, ultimately enhancing its operational capacity and contributing to national peace and security.
