ACCRA – The Ministry of Health and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, have launched a five-year program audit to assess Ghana’s immunization efforts and plan a smooth transition from Gavi’s financial support. The mission, which runs from 2024 to 2029, is a critical step as Ghana prepares to become fully self-financing for its national immunization program.

During the launch, Frank Raji, Director of General Administration at the Ministry of Health, highlighted Ghana’s long-standing partnership with Gavi, which began in 2006. He noted that from 2020 to 2024 alone, Gavi provided crucial support, including vaccine supplies, cold chain upgrades, and technical assistance, which have protected millions of Ghanaians from preventable diseases.

Deputy Health Minister Prof. Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to develop sustainable financing and service delivery plans for the post-transition period. She described the audit as a vital opportunity to reinforce systems, demonstrate accountability, and strengthen trust with international partners.

Charity Tusiime, head of the Gavi Audit Team, stated that the review will focus on transparency, sustainability, and Ghana’s readiness for the transition. The audit will cover key areas such as governance, supply chain management, financial systems, and data quality. Tusiime added that the team will draw on lessons from other countries to help guide Ghana toward full self-financing by 2029.

The meeting brought together high-level officials from the Ministries of Health and Finance, the Ghana Health Service, and various development partners.
